2002
Elk Pole Contest
located on Main
Street - Center of town
Atlanta,
Michigan
Trophy
Winners
1st
Elk In Winner &
Heaviest Elk Winner !
Mr.Rex Webb from Brown city came in at 10:03 a.m. with this 680 lb Bull
Elk.
This majestic animal won the Heaviest Elk award by approximately 100
lbs over the other entries. With the tips of his antlers about even with
the bottom of the Elk Pole cross-beam, his feet where gently resting upon
the ground some 16 feet down!
Mark Kinney of Atlanta was his guide that took Mr. Webb to his
lucky spot NE of town. The day before, they'd been out scouting and saw
several other Elk in this same location. Until then, Mr. Webb says
that he never has even SEEN an Elk in the wild before!
While checking in his bull at the DNR station in Atlanta, he said he
was shaking so much he could hardly fill out the registry tag!
No wonders to why!
Congratulations Mr. Webb, and welcome to Atlanta!
1st Cow In Winner !
Mr. Micheal Lawrenz from Atlanta brought
in the first Cow at 10:25 am. He is a second time Elk Lottery ticket
winner and this is his second elk bagged as well! This beauty
weighed in at 360 lbs.
He
is one of few Atlanta-ites to get a winning draw let alone for 2 times!
Congratulations Mr.Lawrenz!
.
Biggest Rack Winner!
Mr.Jeff Smith of Breckenridge Michigan
brought in this 570 lb Bull
at 12:05 pm. No wonder he's
just
a smiling his bunns off! The spread on this one was 38" on
the inside! That is wider than BOCA requirements for a toilet space!
(tryin' to give ya'll a visual of the size of this rack!)
Congratulations Jeff!!!
Ya done yourself proud!
.

Special THANKS to
Gordon Ferguson and his Rick for helping once again in
hanging these heavy beasts on the Elk Pole. Gordon has volunteered
his time and his equipment for 18 years now.
Although the Elk Pole contest was only held for opening day, Gordon
and Rick volunteered to keep the pole open through the next day.
They stayed in a toasty warm camper all night, baby sitting the prized
elk to make sure no "coyotes" wanted to fool with them.
,,,,, ahem.
Thanks for helping extend the 'show and tell' for the public to see!
Thankyou to Mike Cleveland from Atlanta for helping
document incoming Elk and taking these pictures and sharing them with you
all. Should you want to recieve any copies of these pics, give Mike
a call at 785-5161 and he'll be happy to take care of you.
Thankyou to Pleasy Anderson of Atlanta, who helped hang
the Elk as well as aid the hunters with cutting out the gland sacs of several
elk brought in.
Thankyou to Yotie for making sure the Elk stayed put
